Day #57 : Life in Academia – 365 DoA

Mental Health

A brief word, since I don’t have time for a full post today. If/when you start down the path towards your PhD or Masters, remember that you need to balance work and life. That isn’t to say you need to find a super exciting hobby, more like you need to unwind every once and awhile. There is a lot of burnout in academia, students often find themselves overwhelmed and have a higher rate of depression than the average public. It’s okay to need help, it’s okay to say you cannot do something, and most importantly, it is okay to take time for yourself.

To that end, my dear readers, while I consider this a hobby and have posted faithfully for these past 57 days, I also know that I need to have a good balance as well. I think tomorrow we will change it up some and I’ll post a problem for you at home to solve then the next post will work through it and we’ll see how I like the format.

For today, just take a moment, no matter how busy you find yourself, and relax for a bit. It doesn’t have to be long, just try to unwind some. You’ll thank me later. That said, I’ve got some studying to do and while sometimes the toughest advice to take is your own, I’m going to try to relax a little as well.

Even though you can’t measure mental health with a scale, a tape measure, or a blood test, it’s just as important as your physical health. Don’t lose sight of that, no matter how much you have on your plate. Life can be overwhelming sometimes, taking a break can help you plan a way through it all. In any case, take care of yourself in the present and your future self will thank you. Take care everyone.
