We're a little crazy, about science!

Remember, Trump is just a symptom

Well we may have actually done it. It’s been days and while we are still (STILL) waiting the final count, things are looking good at the moment. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a rocky several months or that the victory is assured. It also doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot of work to do.

Here we are again, I would love to talk science, but instead we are talking politics. Why? Because science is inherently political (like oh I don’t know… the A-bomb, H-bomb, birth control, climate change, transportation… you get the idea). So today, like the past few days we’re talking about politics. In particular Nazis.

What does Trump have to do with Nazis? Depending on who you ask, everything. See the Nazi party didn’t just appear out of thin air, it was modeled on… guess, go on, guess. Did you guess? The answer is the US. No, really we fought against the Nazis, but really they were just trying to be like us (read more)(even more)(still more!)(you get the idea).

Now before you get into the part where you suggest that they were performing eugenics and killing the Jews and we never did anything like that, you need to realize we have (read more), we did (read more), and we still do (still more)!

So when I say Trump and his followers are Nazis, it isn’t just because they are carrying around Nazi flags, shouting Nazi slogans, and screaming about white power. It’s more than that, it’s not just what they are saying or the flag they are waving (as disgusting as all that is), it’s what they ARE ACTIVELY DOING!

When Obama was elected president, we pushed the pendulum of US politics closer to center than it has ever been. Obama wasn’t an extreme left wing president, he was a moderate and his VP, our current president-elect was even MORE moderate. Even still that was far too left for the right, who has been moving further and further right with each passing year and thus skewing center further and further right along with it.

Trump was elected not because he was the best person for the job, but because he was the most openly racist and misogynistic person running. The rest of America needed to be taught a lesson and Trump was the way to do that. That’s the reason why never again is now keeps fighting Trump. It’s why literal holocaust survivors are warning us (more)(even more)(still another warning). This is the GOP in a nutshell, they are what the Nazi party was emulating and it’s no surprise that we are dealing with Nazi fanatics here in the US that all seem to support Trump and the Republican party.

Of course he couldn’t do it alone and tomorrow maybe I’ll touch on at least one of the key players that has been instrumental in reshaping the GOP into a more direct and open party of hate, a party of white. But for now, we need to remember that Trump wasn’t the problem, he was a symptom of the problem. The problem is that we are a nation founded on racism, misogyny, and hate for people different than us.

Almost 70 million Americans voted for Trump, even after the past four years. Almost half of Americans who voted. That’s a whole lot of people who are okay with supporting the Nazi party. Now, before we wrap up and someone throws Godwin’s law in my face, remember that even he said fuck these Nazis.

Screenshot of Mike Godwin's tweet saying, "By all means, compare these shitheads to Nazis. Again and again. I'm with you."
Straight from the man himself, this is a very real tweet by Mike Godwin (Here).

We may have have won over Hitler, but we never really defeated the Nazis, they were already part of the US and continue to be. Yet another reason why there is nothing inherently virtuous about finding the center in politics. In short, we have a lot of work to do and removing Trump from power is barely a step in the right direction. If the survivors of the holocaust are trying to warn us, it’s probably a good time to start listening and start doing something before it’s too late.
