Day 258: The deadline

It’s here.

If you’re reading this, then it is already too late. It’s here, do you feel it? It’s in the house… the deadline. It’s a sneaky dark and evil thing from a time forgotten, but you can feel its presence long before it arrives. It whispers in your ear as you sleep, or did it? Of course, there isn’t anything there for real, right?

They say that success is when opportunity and preparation meet. Of course, they are not around to tell the story themselves. Have you ever wondered why? Maybe they are shy, maybe they don’t want to be found, or maybe, just maybe… the deadline got them. I could be wrong; do you know who they are? Maybe they are tucked safely in their beds, or too busy to identify themselves because they are working on some new goal.

It doesn’t matter anymore, they can’t help me anyway, the deadline is here. I know it is, I catch glimpses of it out of the corner of my eye. It’s angry with me you see, I did not give it my offering yet.

“I’M WORKING ON IT!” I shout to the void… No response.

It can’t be placated, you can’t reason with it, can’t bargain with it, can’t hide from it. It’s not swayed by your begging or your pleas.  The deadline wants one thing from you and if you are not prepared for its arrival, there is no second chances. There is no stopping the deadline and when it comes for you, it’s the end.

Today is that day. It made its presence known, a harmless note on the calendar, circled in red. A little calling card, a gentle nudge to your anxiety. It’s more fun for the deadline this way you see. The fear, the stress, it feeds on it.

You feel it too, a gentle gust of wind on the back of your neck, but how? There are no open windows. It’s the deadline breathing down your neck. I’m sure you have felt it! Maybe you don’t want to admit it, but if you think hard enough you will know the truth.

The deadline is here; the work must be done. It demands the sacrifice! So, this is it my dear readers, I must give the deadline what it came for. There is no other option, but to suffer. Remember my warning! It may be too late for me, but it doesn’t have to be this way for you. You can’t hide, the deadline is coming, and it always gets what it wants.

A man working alone in a dark office surrounded by empty cubicles as far as the eye can see, something in the shadows creeps up over the cubicles from the distance. Coming ever closer... and closer... still closer... it's right next to him now.
