Well yesterday I quietly had a small breakdown in the good sense because I was finally getting the care I wanted from my healthcare providers and when I logged onto twitter for the evening I found a flurry of activity regarding something the supreme court was doing. Wow was I in for a shock when I realized what was going on. I hoped that in my lifetime I wouldn’t see something like this happen. Afterall we were slowly chipping away at the problem, but here we are.
Let me make this unequivocally clear, your religious freedom ends where the next person begins. You can be as devote to whatever you believe as you’d like. You can pray 24 hours a day, take a vow of silence, wear single material clothing, whatever floats your boat. I’m not one to judge. In fact I’m a weird little guy myself, so more power to you for being a weird little person minding your own business. Seriously, whatever works for you, I can support it.
What I cannot support is using what you believe to force others to do what you want. That’s a no-no and more importantly that isn’t protected by the constitution. In fact, there’s a whole separation of church and state thing in there, I don’t know if anyone has noticed. So when a very popular stance, like abortion should be legal and widely available is slowly being overturned by the minority, well now that isn’t how a democracy is supposed to function, now is it?
Of course, we don’t REALLY live in a democracy, that has been chipped away by the powers that be for decades. I mean the electoral college exists because of racism, no really go on and google it, I can wait. One vote should count for exactly one vote, no matter where you live, because that’s what makes a democracy democratic. One vote has the same power as another and thus the majority rules.
Yet here we are with people being persecuted for being trans or more broadly for falling in the LGBTQ+ category, people who are the very definition of just trying to live their lives how they want. In a society that supposedly puts personal freedom above almost everything else, you would think these people would have a celebrated position, not be forced out of states because laws criminalize their existence.
Now you can whine all you want about it, but the fact of the matter is the supreme court already weighed in on this, the popular opinion already weighed in on this, science has already weighed in on this, abortion access is healthcare. And again, you can believe what you want, but you have no right to use your beliefs to force someone to have a child they don’t want. There are already hundreds of thousands of children who need care, go adopt one if you’re that concerned.
Moreover, once the child is forcibly born the people in power pushing for this are the same ones trying to strip away the social safety net, frankly it’s barely there to begin with thanks to the GOP gutting any sort of support at basically every chance they get. If you’re so “pro-life” then why does that seem to only apply to pregnant people? Where is the outrage for child hunger, for child homelessness, for child healthcare? Where are the pro-life people who are advocating for actual children?
They are nowhere to be found, because in the end this isn’t about children, it’s about control and forcing religious beliefs onto people and by religious beliefs we are obviously talking about Christianity, which has a long track record of caring for children. Oh right, there’s that whole pedophile priest issue that seems to never end… huh that’s odd.
Sadly the people pushing these laws are also the same ones refusing to end the practice of child brides, which was just recently brought to my attention how big of an issue that is and let me just say, what the actual fuck is wrong with you people?
Yes, I’m basically just pointing out the hypocrisy of it all, not that the people who support this stuff actually give a shit about being fair or even following their own twisted logic. Afterall, the people in power don’t have to worry, they will always be able to get abortions for their mistresses.
In case you can’t tell, I’m angry and why wouldn’t I be? This is a load of crap and yet another power grab by the GOP to force people into living religious ideals they don’t even follow. So fuck that, I’m of the opinion that the whole system should be scrapped, we hit the big reset button and try again. Because currently only people who are ultra wealthy are becoming politicians with very few exceptions and that’s a problem because the politicians should represent the people as a whole, not just the wealthy.
I suspect the next steps are going to be rough. Sometimes doing the right thing isn’t the same as doing the easy thing. I find that the right thing to do is almost exclusively the hard thing and this is a very hard thing. I don’t know what happens next, but if you can donate to abortion funds, call up your politicians, and make some noise. Things are slowly backsliding into a place where the majority of us don’t want to be, so it’s well past time to do something about it.
