Winter woodworking

Gluing up the frame for the vanity, it should be dry at this point.

It’s the day after Christmas for me and blah! The holidays are an excuse to eat like garbage and let me tell you I feel it. Yesterday I did absolutely nothing above what I needed to do. Basically no work, school, home, or otherwise. It was nice, but I get antsy so today I’m planning to do some work on a project I started over the summer.

We have a break in the weather meaning the insulated garage with a little help will be warm enough to get some work done. I’m not a pro woodworker or anything, but I do enjoy making things so I thought it would be fun to pick up the hobby. My summer project was a bit ambitious and took longer than I planned so it’s been sitting outside for a bit, but that’s fine because it’s very close to being done and now that I have a week or so that I can dedicate to work on it, I plan on (hopefully finishing the job).

I’m making a piece of furniture, technically I guess. Really it’s a vanity for the bathroom (the box the sink sits on). There was a lot of planning, prepping, and I even made a 3D model of it to make sure my design was correct. I’m really excited to finish it, it’s nothing special and in fact really basic, but it’s my first real woodworking project so it will be cool to show it off to others when I have guests or something. Today I’m finishing some gluing and making a few more cuts to get the fit right. I did sneak out the other day to do some gluing, but those were the pieces I had ready, not the entire thing.

Anyway, that’s the plan for the next few days and hopefully by the time I have to go back to work (officially) I’ll have the vanity done and ready to install the next time I have a free day. Or who knows, maybe I’m overestimating how much I have left and I’ll get it done and installed this week. We’ll have to wait and see. Even when it’s done I will need to stain and seal it so some of the time consuming parts are just waiting for the thing to dry. Not to mention I still have a lot of gluing to do, which is limited mostly by my number of clamps. It could go either way, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

But enough about us, what about you?
