Day 248: A Virtual Conference

Every zoom meeting I try to break my PI and get him to laugh, this was my last attempt, still nothing… my work continues.

This will be my first conference since the pandemic and it will be a virtual one. To be completely honest, it wasn’t until yesterday that I was reminded we had one today. It’s a little bit different from our normal routine and I think that is what is throwing me off.

Typically there is some build up to a conference, we have posters to print, slides to prepare, and travel arrangements to be made. This year we were planning on hosting the conference at my school so the last part wouldn’t have applied this time around. Since we are hosting this all virtually, things are a bit different (okay a lot different).

First, I will be doing this in my house clothes. Which is to say shorts and a t-shirt. Not proper conference attire when we meet in person, but thankfully we are not meeting in person so I can wear pretty much whatever I want, I like this a lot since I hate wearing dress clothes with a passion, maybe it’s all the uniform wearing from the Marines, but I hate feeling constricted. It makes me anxious, like I’m being held against my will or something. Any who, that isn’t a problem today thankfully and I am somewhat okay with this.

Another interesting aspect is that we are shortening the meeting. This makes me happy since a lot of it is fluff to begin with. Maybe it’s because I am a young (in my career anyway) researcher, but a lot of the stuff they cover is fluff, completely pointless and doesn’t do anything yet we spend about 2 hours discussing exactly how we should word this fluff. I just hate wasting my time when I feel like I have so much to do already.

In any case, it’s time to get to the meeting, hopefully it will be over quickly (spoiler, it won’t).

But enough about us, what about you?
