Day 116: Conference Day 1

moon view

Shot I took of the moon

Made it in one piece to my destination! Since I’m writing this before today’s events start, let’s talk about yesterday. While the bulk of the time was spent traveling it wouldn’t hurt to muse on a few of the events, especially since today will be a much busier (or at least more event packed) day.

First up, let’s talk about my flight experience. As a junior researcher (IE not a professor) I fly coach. I can’t complain too much, the travel is paid for and despite feeling like a sardine, free is a good price. The problem with flying is the airlines, they are always trying to squeeze money out of people. This also means shoving as many people onto a plane as possible. So I, a larger guy, am stuck sitting in a seat that is too narrow for my shoulders. Literally, the width of my shoulders is larger than the seat I am sitting in, guess who got a middle seat on a packed flight?

This guy….

Sometimes I get lucky and my seat neighbors are polite enough to give me some room, or at least try not to push into my seat area. Other times however, I am not so lucky. This was one of those times (come to think of it the last time I flew this happened too). I had both people trying to be comfortable which left me sitting with my shoulders rolled forward and my arms in the middle of my lap for the duration of the flight.

But enough complaining about that.

We had a dinner tonight and apparently I didn’t get the memo that it was causal dress. Now, I’ve had several occurrences where I attended an event and it was formal, I have mentioned this before in fact… oops. However, the one time I get dressed up my boss comes down wearing the least formal clothing I have ever seen him in (note I’ve only non-super formal clothes I’ve ever seen him are dress slacks and dress shirt). I’m talking jeans, sweater, leather coat. I’m blown away as I’m standing there in dress slacks and dress shirt thinking, “where did I go wrong?!”

As weird and uncomfortable as it is to be underdressed for an event, let me just say it is just as weird being overdressed for an event. My roommate (we share rooms to save on the cost) also dressed nice, so here we are dressed nice in a room full of people wearing one step up from sweat pants and tee shirts. In other words, we’re off to a great start. On the bright side, I doubt my PI will say anything about the way I was dressed, so there is that.

Anyway, I had some extra time to write this time around, but going forward I’m not sure that I will have the time so I hope to have a bunch of photos to make the posts worth reading. I didn’t take any of the event itself (privacy and what not), but I did get a few around town. The nice moon photo I took at the top of the post for example was on the way back from dinner, here are a couple other photos on the same trip back to the hotel.

Christmas tree

Now, let it be known I’m not a  fan of Christmas. Not only becuase of the commercialization of it or the creepy religious undertones (and I do mean undertones, catholics hijacked christmas, thank you). I mean yes to an extent, but there is something more fundamental. It’s because it puts the onus on the individuals around you to buy gifts for each other. If you don’t have money, well you get a crappy (or even no) christmas. Contrast that to my favorite holiday, Halloween. If you can’t afford candy, you turn off the lights, rich, poor, doesn’t matter, candy for everyone. I do like lights though, like the photo above, or the one below. So it has that going for it at least.

Christmas lights

Anyway this post is not about my views on the holidays , so let’s leave it at that. I’ll be back tomorrow with an update from today (confusing I know) and hopefully more photos.

Until next time, don’t stop learning!

But enough about us, what about you?
